Driving High Availability and Performance with Oracle Exadata at Sleeman
Sleeman, a leading organisation in the retail and manufacturing sector, partnered with DSP-Eclipsys to modernise its Oracle estate through the deployment and optimisation of Oracle Exadata. The programme focused on enhancing availability, improving ERP performance, and equipping internal teams with the expertise to manage the new environment confidently.
Overview
Over an 18-month engagement, now ongoing, DSP-Eclipsys delivered a full Exadata implementation, migrated Oracle eBusiness Suite (EBS) databases, designed a Maximum Availability Architecture (MAA), and provided hands-on DBA training. The result was a high-performance, resilient Exadata platform supporting mission-critical ERP workloads across multiple regions.
Industry: Retail and Manufacturing
Products: Oracle Exadata, Oracle eBusiness Suite, Oracle RAC, Oracle Data Guard
Services: Exadata Services, Training, Bank of Hours
Sleeman’s existing infrastructure required modernization to meet evolving operational demands. Oracle eBusiness Suite underpinned critical business functions, and performance, stability, and uptime were essential to support manufacturing and retail operations.
The organisation set three clear objectives.
First, to implement a Maximum Availability Architecture (MAA) design to ensure high resilience, leveraging Oracle RAC and Data Guard to protect against downtime and data loss.
Second, to execute a seamless migration of EBS databases to Oracle Exadata, ensuring minimal disruption while achieving measurable performance gains.
Third, to provide structured DBA training and ongoing support so Sleeman’s internal team could manage and optimise the new Exadata environment effectively.
Given the complexity of EBS, cross-regional infrastructure requirements, and the introduction of Exadata technology, the project demanded deep Oracle specialisation and disciplined execution.
DSP-Eclipsys delivered a comprehensive Exadata deployment and optimisation programme.
A 1/8 Rack Oracle Exadata system was deployed and configured to support Sleeman’s ERP workloads. The platform was tuned and optimised to maximise I/O performance, database throughput, and workload efficiency.
The team then migrated the Oracle EBS databases onto Exadata, ensuring a controlled transition with thorough validation and performance benchmarking. Alongside the migration, DSP-Eclipsys implemented a robust Maximum Availability Architecture, incorporating Oracle RAC for high availability and Data Guard replication between a North America Exadata system and a remote APAC Exadata system.
This cross-regional Data Guard configuration significantly strengthened disaster recovery posture and business continuity capability.
To enhance operational testing and change validation, Snapshot Standby databases were introduced. This enabled safe testing of patches and configuration changes without impacting production workloads.
Recognising that technology adoption must be matched by skills development, DSP-Eclipsys delivered tailored training sessions to Sleeman’s DBA and IT teams. The training focused on Exadata architecture, performance optimisation techniques, MAA best practices, and ongoing management processes.
Ongoing advisory and optimisation support continues under a flexible Bank of Hours model.
The project successfully delivered the full Exadata implementation and migration of all EBS environments.
Oracle eBusiness Suite performance improved measurably, particularly across concurrent managers, critical business functions, and key queries. Users experienced faster processing times and more consistent system responsiveness.
The implementation of RAC and Data Guard strengthened system availability and resilience, while Snapshot Standby capabilities introduced a more controlled and efficient mechanism for testing changes.
Sleeman now operates its EBS environment on a high-performance, highly available Exadata platform designed for long-term scalability.
The engagement delivered strategic and operational benefits across Sleeman’s organisation.
✅ System availability improved through the implementation of a robust MAA design, reducing risk exposure and strengthening business continuity across regions. Cross-site Data Guard replication provided confidence in disaster recovery readiness.
✅ Performance gains across EBS functions enhanced productivity for finance, operations, and supply chain teams, enabling faster processing and improved decision-making.
✅ The introduction of Snapshot Standby databases reduced risk associated with patching and change management, improving governance and testing efficiency.
✅ Through structured training and ongoing support, Sleeman’s internal teams developed the capability to manage and optimise Exadata independently, ensuring long-term sustainability of the platform.
Sleeman selected DSP-Eclipsys for its deep specialisation in Oracle Exadata and Maximum Availability Architecture design.
DSP-Eclipsys combines advanced technical capability across Exadata, RAC, Data Guard, and EBS with practical experience in cross-regional deployments. This expertise was critical in delivering a resilient architecture spanning North America and APAC environments.
The team’s disciplined migration methodology ensured minimal disruption while achieving tangible performance gains. Beyond implementation, DSP-Eclipsys invested in knowledge transfer and customer-specific training, enabling Sleeman to build internal capability rather than rely solely on external support.
Through its flexible Bank of Hours engagement model, DSP-Eclipsys continues to act as a strategic Oracle partner — providing optimisation guidance, architectural advice, and ongoing assurance that Sleeman’s Exadata platform remains secure, performant, and aligned to evolving business needs.
